The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science offers various types of financial aid, the only application needed at CCMS is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov, through this application you are applying for the following type of aid:

  • Federal Pell Grant
  • Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant
  • Ohio College Opportunity Grant
  • CCMS Grant - 2nd & 4th quarters only
  • Federal Family Educational Loan Program (FFELP) for student loans
  • Approved VA Benefits

How to get Financial Aid

Step One - Apply for Financial Aid
Complete the FAFSA, the Dept. of Education web site for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This application requires a dept. of education "pin" number which can be ordered from the site. You will also want to put the CCMS school code (010906)on this application when prompted for your desired school. E-sign with your "pin" number. If parental information and signature are required, it is recommended that your parent apply for a "pin" number also.

Step Two - Review your Financial Aid Offers
You will be notified by email when your award is ready to view. From here you need to accept/deny/adjust your grants and/or loans. CCMS awards every student to their maximum eligibility, your eligibility may change when you reapply for aid for the last quarters of your program. Please consider the necessity of accepting the full amount of loans before you accept your full aid package.
Click on My Financial Aid, which will take you to the Great Lakes site where you will begin the process of finalizing your financial award.

Step Three - Complete Loan Counseling & Note Signature(s)
If you left the Great Lakes site after accepting your award - you have not completed the process and do not yet have your aid in place.
Return to the Great Lakes site through My Financial Aid and select "continue". The next section is Entrance Counseling, a required information session explaining your rights and responsibilities in assuming a student loan. Continue to the lender section to select a lender for your student loans. If you need to sign a promissory note, the site will take you to the appropriate section to complete the process. You are not finished until you have reached the page that indicates that you have successfully completed a promissory note.  Follow this link to apply for alternative student loans.

Step Four - Loan Exit Counseling
If you have had any Stafford loans during your enrollment, you will need to complete a session of Exit Counseling before leaving school. This can be done any time after the mid term of your last quarter. Loan Exit Counseling is also at the Great Lakes site.

Financial Aid Limitations and Overawards

There are limits to the amount of financial assistance a student can receive. All student assistance is held to the Financial Aid Office - determined cost of attendance budget for the given year. This is determined by your tuition amount, fees, and an average allowance for housing, food, books and supplies, and other non-tuition, educational expenses based on students in your general situation.

The Total financial aid package - to include all types of aid received - must remain within the cost budget. It is therefore important that you notify the Financial AId Office of any scholarship, assistance or laon funding that does not appear as part of your aid package. By doing so early you reduce the risk of having aid adjusted after funds have been received.

Need More Aid?

Many students need additional money for educational expenses. Private Education Loans are available and CCMS has several lenders and their information available for you to choose and compare. This link Alternative Education Loans will direct you through the online process of applying and signing for these loans.

Parent Plus Loans are available to supplement the cost of attendance and can be applied for, approved and signed for with your parent's Department of Education "pin" number.

Other Opportunities

College Work Program
Two students from each incoming class will have the opportunity to apply for Clinical Lab Assistant positions. Those who apply for these positions and are chosen on the basis of need, academic ability, and interest. Information is available from the Director of the Clinical Program. Please contact the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science for more information and an application.

Part-Time Employment
Many students make arrangements with local funeral homes for part-time employment while they attend CCMS. These arrangements vary widely with regard to pay, working conditions, and living accommodations. Applicants for these positions may obtain a list of funeral homes from CCMS well in advance of registration. The funeral homes select personnel on a first-come, first-served basis. CCMS does not guarantee employment or endorse particular firms. It is the student's responsibility to find employment. In addition to funeral home employment, there are opportunities in the greater Cincinnati area in hospitals, convalescent homes, department stores, hotels, businesses, and industry. Students should not sacrifice study time unless there is absolute financial need. The CCMS coursework requires the full-time effort of most students.

Financial Policies

All tuition and fees are subject to change by the Board of Trustees to become effective as announced and will apply to students already enrolled unless otherwise specified. Official registration in any program includes, as a condition, the payment of all fees and charges. See the current Schedule of Tuition and Fees for all charges. See the current Schedule of Tuition and Fees under Admissions, for all changes.

Withdrawals
Withdrawing at any time during a term may constitute a Federal Return of funds calculation which requires that the school return any financial aid that has not been “earned” by the student.  After returning Federal funds, the student may still be responsible for any tuition owed based on the schools refund policy.

CCMS Retained Tuition Policy

Students will forfeit their tuition if they withdraw from a course or the college after the first day of classes.

Federal Return of Unearned Title IV Funds Policy (R2T4 Policy)

Federal regulations have been enacted which state that students may forfeit a portion of their federal student assistance if they fail to complete the program of study in which they are enrolled.
This policy affects students who:

1. Received or were eligible to receive federal student financial assistance authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA, i.e. Federal Pell Grants, Federal SEOG awards, or Stafford or Parent Plus loans awarded under the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) or Federal Direct Student Loan (FDSL) programs, an

2. Who, on or after October 7, 2000, withdrew or were terminated from the institution during the first 60% of any payment period or period of enrollment.

Payment periods are defined as a (quarter, trimester, semester or X number of clock credit hours).
Eligible Title IV aid recipients who fail to cmplete over 60% of a payment period of enrollment are considered to have not earned all of the Federal Student AId that may have previouslu been awarded for that payment period or period of enrollment. Accordingly, a required calculation will be performed to determine the portion of the unearned Federal Student AId that must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education. This calculation will be done before tuition refund calculation is performed in accordance with the institution's refund policy. In many cases, the Return of Unearned Title IV Funds calculation will result in the student owing tuition and fees to the institution that would otherwise have been paid with Federal Student AId. This policy may also result in the student owing a refund of unearned federal aid to the Department of Education.
