Funeral Director / Embalmer Job Summary: To oversee the planning, organization, and management of all aspects of funeral services. To assist families following the loss of a loved one and to implement the choices made by that family for services and final disposition. They must interact well with people and provide their duties with compassion and emotional stability. Job Responsibilities: • Performs on-call responsibilities including: taking first calls, talking with families, and answering questions. • Make first call removals or arrange with staff for the removals to be made in a timely manner. • Supervise and care for the deceased: verifying identification, obtaining permission for embalming, embalming, dressing, cosmetics and casketing. Proper care and storage of bodies for cremation. • Meets with families of the deceased to discuss funeral arrangements and requests. • Explains pricing and product information for caskets and flowers to family and/or friends. • Orders casket, flowers, and other necessities for funeral and memorial services. • Assists families with making arrangements with the cemetery and scheduling of services. • Accepts and process payments for funeral services. • Ensures that set-up for the memorial service, visitation, and funeral adheres to families’ wishes. • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the funeral home. • Oversees transportation of casket to church and cemetery. • Addresses and resolves and customer issues or complaints. • Maintains positive relationships with vendors, church officials, and cemetery directors. • Orders supplies for funeral home as needed. • Oversees scheduling of workers for services. • Assigns duties to funeral home staff as necessary. • This is an overview and responsibilities are not limited to the list above. Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalency Has successfully completed 60 hours of academic work at an accredited college or University. Has successfully graduated from a n accredited school of mortuary science Has successfully completed one year of apprenticeship under and recognized by the state of West Virginia. Has a West Virginia Funeral Directors and Embalmers License in good standing. Work Environment, Hours, and Salary Work consists of a 40 plus hour work week, depending on the needs of families. Weekend and evening hours are common. Will spend a significant portion of time in a professional setting meeting with families, making arrangements, overseeing funerals, visitations, memorial services. This will be done at the funeral home, church or other venue chosen by the family. Embalming room as needed to embalm, dress and casket bodies. Working with a LIC Funeral Director on a schedule of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm M – F, with a three-day weekend followed by a day off on week of weekend off. On call M & W or T & Th and weekend on call. Salary, benefits, and bonus are commensurate with experience.
