The Psychology of Funeral Rites, Rituals and Ceremonies with Todd Van Beck
Have you ever wondered what happens to people, i.e. the general population when they attend a death ritual, a funeral, a ceremony for the deceased? In this educational offering, Mr. Van Beck will draw on this 50 years of experience to explore and dissect the psychology of ceremonies and rituals to give solid answers to the values, purposes, and benefits of the funeral.
The seminar will also address the issue of communicating these benefits in a culture that has clearly confused the essentials of a funeral with the accessories of a funeral.
The communication portion of this educational program will offer safe, tried and true suggestions on how the funeral professional can breach this topic to the general population as well as bereaved families without crossing the line of being self-serving and unprofessional.

Infant Embalming Techniques - Live Webinar with Todd Van Beck
March 29, 2023
9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
3 CEUs
Cost: $120
Many parents know well that there is no greater pain than the loss of a child at birth. Approximately 35,000 newborn infants die annually in this country within the first 28 days of life. Stated another way one neonatal death occurs every 15 minutes somewhere in the United States. The good news is that our rapidly increasing technology has made life possible for thousands of babies who just a few short years ago would have had no chance for living. We are saving more babies than in the past, but for bereaved parents, we continue to lose the battle against death’s companion, grief.
The funeral professional must refresh and renew as new research continues. It is clear now that the work of sensitive and skilled embalmers is vital in meeting these very special needs. We must not neglect this vitally important training area in the licensed funeral professional’s continuing education experience.
What the program will cover:
• A review of the Psychology of Grief with particular focus on the needs of the bereaved parent of a dead infant.
• Counseling techniques in speaking with a bereaved parent about the validity or the value, purpose and benefit of embalming the infant. All advantages of such a decision will be addressed.

Description
The death of a family member, be it from age. illness, trauma or violence can shatter the security of the family. The death of a family member may challenge one’s life’s purpose. When you see a family member hurting or angry, you may not know how to help the ones you love when you’re also grieving. Grief within the family system includes children, grandparents, parents, partners, siblings, spouses, and other extended family members. It may feel as if your grief is discounted or minimized in our quick fix society. Surviving may be acceptable to some but learning to work through grief should be the goal in order to rebuild your family system. Grief does change you and you have the option of staying in the grief experience or allowing yourself to be transformed by the experience.
This conference will address issues related to the impact of grief on the family system and to acknowledged the grief experiences of those you love and serve. Learning to move beyond surviving grief to working through the grief journey will be discussed. Counseling strategies and the role of support groups, both peer and professional led, as part of the transformational experience of grief will be shared.
The Annual Conference on Grief and Loss is the result of the collaborative efforts of several bereavement professionals in the Greater Cincinnati area. Our goal is to offer a one day program featuring a nationally recognized speaker to local bereavement providers in an affordable venue.

Poul Lemasters, Esq.
Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer Attorney & National Keynote Speaker Principal, Lemasters Consulting, LLC
Poul began his career in death care (funeral homes, cemeteries, cremation) more than 20 years ago as a funeral director and embalmer. He quickly recognized that the growing risk and liability in death care along with the lack of support and resources for those in this profession made for a deadly combination. So, he decided to go to law school—and he passed! Poul used his unique background in both death care and law to provide resources to the vast death care profession for years.
Today, Poul uses his multi-dimensional background as a platform to speak to ALL businesses. His unique background allows him to speak on a variety of topics that affect everyone; add in the death care and legal backdrop and you are in store for some unforgettable stories and experiences that will not soon be forgotten!
