Employing Our Grads

Corporate Partners

Thank you to our corporate partners for the Educational Cremation Center!

Facultatieve Technologies (FT USA) is partnering with us to provide the cremator, auto-loader, and dustless processing station. We are excited about partnering with FT USA because they are the manufacture of the world’s most advanced cremation systems. FT USA is not only providing the equipment but also access to the most advanced technical expertise in the world.

Scott Goodsell, G.H. FORBES Associates Architects has been the lead architect designer. Scott is a veteran of many funeral home and cemetery architectural projects and believes in our Educational Cremation Center so deeply that he is providing his services pro bono.

International Cemetery Crematory Funeral Association (ICCFA) will be partnering with us to design, market, develop, and implement a week-long Advanced Cremation Operations Program (ACOP) course for death care professionals. We have been so pleased with our working relationship with ICCFA providing the Cremation Operator Certification Program (COCP) for the past three years that it was a natural evolution to advance our valued partnership with ICCFA to the next level by introducing an Advanced Cremations Operations Program.

Alumni Ambassadors

Join other CCMS alumni in representing the college at career fairs, helping with fundraising, volunteer during special events, and more.

Ambassadors Club

Because our alums have connections in their communities, CCMS is forming an “Ambassadors Club” - those alums willing to share their time and talents in a variety of ways. These alums make a lasting impact by supporting admission and recruitment, helping prepare current students for life after graduation and keeping classmates connected.

In effect, these alums serve as the ‘face’ of the college in their community,” as they are best suited to share insight into the college and the death care profession. From representing the college at fairs and career days, to taking a leadership role by keeping classmates connected or bringing a prospective student to visit campus, one can be very or minimally involved as an Ambassador. Even as simple as wearing CCMS apparel or displaying memorabilia can help build interest in the college.

Join other CCMS alumni in representing the college at career fairs, helping with fundraising, volunteer during special events, and more.

“Serving as an example for those who strive to be the best death care professional; supporting the profession and their alma mater with time, money, and leadership at the local and national levels. They represent the best in funeral service. They have given of their talents selflessly to their church and community as well as their District, State, and National Funeral Directors Associations. We are proud to have them as our alum and feel honored to recognize their leadership, quality of service and dedication to the death care profession. They truly are role models for our tradition of excellence.”

I’m a CCMS alumna. How do I request a copy of my transcript?

You can request your transcript via the online form or print the form and mail to CCMS. There is a $15 fee per transcript.

Notice to purchasers of the 2014 Edition of the CCMS Alumni Directory:

September 3, 2015 update:

The College recently learned that Alumni Research, Inc. and its CEO, Robert Laping, have filed for bankruptcy protection in August 2015. The Florida Attorney General had previously filed a claim for unfair and deceptive trade practices against Alumni Research and Mr. Laping in June 2015 to seek recovery and damages associated with the prepaid yet unfulfilled directories. The Attorney General intends to continue to pursue this claim, and has sought the approval of the bankruptcy court to do so. We have informed the Attorney General that our alumni have been impacted in the same manner as the other 43 schools’ alumni discovered thus far. As for the College, we are working through the bankruptcy process to reclaim the property we provided to Alumni Research. There is a possibility that you will receive requests from the Florida Attorney General or the bankruptcy trustee. We encourage you to respond. For those of you who prepaid for the directory, the claim for recovery of that money is personal to you and you should ensure you complete whatever is necessary to qualify for any potential recoupment. We do not know if there will be any financial recovery for this horrific situation. The College plans to monitor the Attorney General’s case and the bankruptcy proceedings. We will let you know if we learn anything of value.

Employing a CCMS grad is a great choice!

We can say with confidence that you are likely to find that perfect fit among our diverse group of graduates. CCMS students benefit from our hands-on academic programs and graduate with practical experience that is sure to beat the competition. Having our own clinical facilities for exclusive and unlimited use by our students, coupled with the large volume of cases that we manage, results in students who exceed the amount of embalming cases and restorations required by accreditation standards. Our family-like campus environment also breeds confidence in our students. Regardless of what traits/skills you may be looking for, we are confident we can help you find a hardworking, knowledgeable, ethical, compassionate, ready-to-learn individual.

We invite you to share the loss of a fellow alumnus/alumna with us.

We strive to be a resource to all funeral service professionals. On this page you will find information on individual and business licenses. Are you a graduate of CCMS? See our Alumni section. Need to post a job for an apprentice or licensee? See our Job Board. Also check out our Continuing Education section for upcoming events.

I’m a CCMS alumnus. How do I update my contact information?

You can update your contact information via our website. We encourage you to keep in touch with us.

June 26, 2015:

CCMS has received numerous inquiries from individuals who purchased the 2014 edition of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science Alumni Directory, which has been published and distributed by Alumni Research, Inc. since 1998. We understand that many of our alumni placed advance, pre-paid orders in 2014 with Alumni Research, Inc., expecting publication and distribution of the Directory some time ago. We are extremely disappointed that Alumni Research, Inc. has neither published the Directory nor filled these orders.

Having partnered for many years successfully, CCMS never anticipated such a failure on the part of Alumni Research, Inc.  We extend our apology to alumni and assure that we are actively seeking resolution. Over the past several months, CCMS has demanded that Alumni Research, Inc. promptly and completely resolve this unacceptable situation, but there has been no response to date. We are continuing to seek resolution, including reimbursements to those who paid for a Directory. Please note, that the breach by Alumni Research, Inc. in accepting payments but not fulfilling orders is a breach directly between the company and the purchaser. If you paid for a Directory and have not received a refund, you should consult an attorney or the consumer protection division of your state attorney general’s office regarding your individual legal rights.  You may also contact the Florida state attorney general’s office, where Alumni Research conducts business.

Together, we may be able to resolve this unfortunate situation. Please know that we will provide any and all updates as they become available.

Co-op Opportunities

Co-op Preceptor Options

Use your experience to contribute to student learning and growth as a Preceptor in our Co-op program.  Our Co-op Coordinator will work directly with you to select a student to work within your funeral home, under your guidance, to complete their academic requirements.

What is CCMS Co-op?

The Funeral Service Co-op (part of the Semester IV BMS curriculum) provides six weeks of practical experience in an off-campus funeral home setting, under the guidance of a licensed funeral professional (referred to as the “Preceptor”). Students participate in removals, preparations, dressing and casketing, arrangements, visitations, funerals, and office procedures. The student, the funeral home, and the college enter into a tri-party relationship in which each accepts responsibility for the co-op experience. The goal of this relationship is to provide the student an opportunity, under academic supervision, to participate in the actual practice of funeral service.

Co-op students should anticipate working approximately 30 hours per week in their assigned funeral home.  As a requirement of the curriculum, students earn 6 credit hours towards their bachelor program requirements upon successful completion. Students do not receive financial compensation during co-op.

Courtesy Cards and Reciprocity

Reciprocal License

In today’s mobile society, many licensed professionals deem it beneficial to transfer their licenses when they relocate or opt to work primarily in a nearby bordering state.  Qualified practitioners who have satisfied fundamental requirements when obtaining initial licensing should have the ability to apply for reciprocal licenses. Reciprocation requirements vary by state but may include application, payment of fees on a renewing basis, and the passing of a state laws exam.

Ohio Revised Code governing reciprocal funeral director licenses

Courtesy Cards

A courtesy card only allows you to perform the duties of a funeral director, such as transporting the deceased across state lines and conducting funerals in the state in which a courtesy card has been issued. Courtesy Cards do not permit a practitioner to embalm in that state. You must also be licensed and work in a bordering state. Unlike regular or reciprocal licenses, you are not required to take an exam for this registration. Check your state requirements for specifics.

Apprentice Opportunities

Master Funeral Directors Options

CCMS grads are in high demand across the nation. As a master funeral director, you could have the privilege of mentoring a recent graduate during their apprenticeship. Becoming a master funeral director is usually achieved through a one-day 6-8 hour training seminar. Contact your state licensing board or the National Funeral Director’s Association for seminar opportunities available.

About Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is the period of time spent working as an apprentice funeral director/embalmer under the direction and responsibility of a licensed funeral director who has received certified training as a “master funeral director/embalmer” in their state. An apprenticeship typically ranges 1-2 years, either post-graduate or pre-mortuary school, depending on state requirements. Apprentices must register with their state board after completion of specific state criteria, prior to being granted the rights to serve under license supervision. The master funeral director/embalmer should check with his/her state board prior to serving as a Master Funeral Director/Embalmer, since requirements differ by state.

Why become a Master to an Apprentice?

  • Make a direct contribution to the skill set of tomorrow’s practitioners
  • Learn new techniques and current trends from passionate students
  • Benefit from another set of hands to help with your busy schedule (with less expense than a licensee!)
  • Earn continuing education units
  • Make a difference! Your commitment is a direct contribution to the betterment of the nation’s leading, oldest, non-profit funeral service educator-CCMS!

Todd Van Beck In Memoriam

Todd Van Beck Memorial Scholarship

The death care profession lost an icon in funeral service on May 23rd with the passing of Todd Van Beck. Beloved father of Thomas. Son of the late Tony and Norma (nee Fecan). Brother of Scott (Sarah) Van Beck; uncle of Wesley, Helen, Sam and Neil Van Beck.  Todd was a person who had a half-century love affair with both funeral and cemetery service. He willingly admitted that he was no “expert!” and also quickly admitted that there was nothing about this work and life that he did not enjoy, and in which he did not have intense interest. Todd had said: “I have never done a day’s work in my life; it has all been fun and interesting.”

CCMS has established a scholarship in Todd's name to honor his legacy.

More about the Todd Van Beck Memorial Scholarship

Todd was uniquely gifted and took great pride in providing reverent care for the dead and compassionate care for the living. Todd earned his Professional Diploma in Mortuary Science in 1973 from the New England Institute of Funeral Service Arts and Sciences (MA), his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Psychology from Mount Mercy University (IA), and his Master of Arts in Religion from Athenaeum of Ohio (Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary).  In 2005, he was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree from Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service, (Houston, TX).   Todd held several certifications and licensures, including the Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP), Certified Funeral Executive (CFE) and licensure in several states.

Prior to his employment as Program Director at Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (CCMS), Todd served as Faculty/Director of Continuing Education at John A. Gupton College (TN); General Manager of Forest Hill Funeral Homes & Memorial Parks (TN); Director of Family Funeral Care and Public Relations at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home (GA); President and CEO of the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service (TX); Director of Education for the Loewen Group, Inc. (OH), and Director of Education for Trust 100.  His academic career began at CCMS in 1982.

Todd was an active writer and prominent international speaker in the profession. He authored 8 books and over 400 articles on death care topics.  An avid historian and academician, Mr. Van Beck grew up in Southwestern Iowa and declared at the young age of 5 that he would become a funeral director one day. Todd operated funeral homes, cemeteries and mortuary colleges during his career. Todd selflessly served the death care profession in many arenas across the nation and internationally, which satisfied his desire to see the world. An Abraham Lincoln scholar, he was an expert in the deaths of United States presidents and authored a presentation about each of the funerals of the deceased American presidents. He was thrilled and humbled to return to CCMS and his cherished Queen City where he planned to continue his mission until retirement. Todd served on the boards of the Cincinnati Fire Museum, the William Howard Taft National Birthplace Site, and the Funeral Service Foundation of the National Funeral Director Association.

More about the Rachael Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Rachael joined the #CCMSfamily August 27, 2015, and was known for her kind, humorous nature. She quickly befriended her peers and successfully saw her dreams come to fruition as she completed her education in December 2016 and set off to central Ohio to pursue an apprenticeship. Rachael was employed as an apprentice with Shaw-Davis Funeral Home at the time of her death.

Rachael had many passions throughout her life. First and foremost, her career!  She had a gift of compassion! She enjoyed dancing and socializing with family and friends. She loved Children! She loved her Life! Rachael will always be remembered for her uniqueness, hard work, loving kindness, joy and infectious laughter. She had the ability to make a lasting impression on everyone she came in contact with, and she could light up a room with her smile,” says Rachael’s family.
