English Language Requirement

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit the TOEFL found at http://www.ets.org/toefl.  Applicants who have attended a school where the primary language of instruction is English may have this requirement waived.

Have your official transcript(s) sent to CCMS

Applicants should request official transcripts from the Registrar of all colleges previously attended. There is a section in the Application to document from which institutions you have earned credits and requested transcripts.  Your application will not be considered complete until CCMS has received your official transcript(s). Official transcripts are to be issued by the college(s) Registrar directly to the CCMS Admissions Director in a sealed envelope or by electronic transmission to admissions@ccms.edu.

Gather items you’ll need to complete the application

When filling out the online application, you will need to have several items at hand:

  • Driver’s license OR government-issued photo ID
  • Credit hours or degree earned for previous colleges/universities

You also have the option to upload electronic copies of the documents below. Alternatively, you may provide a physical copy before Orientation:

  • Driver’s license/government-issued photo ID or recent photo
  • Name change documentation (if applicable)
  • Disability accommodation documentation (if applicable)
  • Veterans – DD214 form (if applicable)

In compliance with the requirements of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (H. R. 4137) as signed into law on August 14, 2008, the following is the Code of Conduct regarding student loans for the Office of Financial Aid at Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.

Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science:

  • Does not require students to use a particular lender or in any way limit the choice of lenders for students.
  • Does not recommend external lenders to students or their parents, and does not maintain a list of lenders that are preferred over other lenders (we do provide a list of lenders as possible suggestions – which in no way should be recognized as preferring one over another).
  • Processes loan applications through any lender a student or parent chooses.
  • Does not solicit or accept anything of value from any lender in exchange for any advantage sought by the lender to make educational loans to students enrolled at, or admitted to, CCMS.
  • Prohibits employees of the financial aid office, or any employee who otherwise has responsibilities with respect to educational loans, from taking from any lender any gift worth more than nominal value.
  • Prohibits employees of the financial aid office, or any employee who otherwise has responsibilities with respect to educational loans, from entering into any type of consulting arrangement or other contracts to provide to a lender services relating to educational loans.
  • Prohibits employees of the financial aid office, or any employee who otherwise has responsibilities with respect to educational loans, who serve on an advisory board (or commission or group) relating to educational loans established by a lender or group of lenders, from receiving anything of value from the lender or group of lenders in connection with serving on such advisory board (or commission or group).
  • Prohibits external lenders’ employees, representatives, or agents from providing staffing services to the financial aid office.
  • Prohibits external lenders’ employees, representatives, or agents from identifying themselves to students of CCMS or their parents as employees, representatives or agents of the financial aid office.
  • Does not assign for any borrower, through award packaging or other methods, a loan to a particular lender, and does not refuse to certify or delay certification of any loan based on the borrower’s selection of a particular lender or guaranty agency.

CCMS is required to provide the Self-Certification form, and the information needed to complete the form, to any enrolled or admitted applicant (or to the parent applicant of an enrolled or admitted student) upon the applicant’s request for a private education loan Self-Certification form. FAFSA

There is a large number of students in need of help with college tuition. While there are many different sources of college financial aid, there is one main application that is used to apply for most funding – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

  • Make sure you sign up for a FSA User ID before you begin. Here are sign-up instructions.
  • Complete the FAFSA to apply for state and federal aid programs.
  • Be sure to list the CCMS school code on your FAFSA: 010906
  • You must file a FAFSA each year to be considered for college financial aid.
  • Watch a video on the FAFSA process.
  • Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your tax information to your FAFSA. If you didn’t use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool initially, you can go back and make the corrections.

Once your application has been received, the Office of Student Financial Aid may ask you to submit additional documents if you’re selected for verification information. Check your CCMS email account often, and make sure to submit any additional documents as quickly as possible.

Award Guide

Cost of Attendance (sometimes referred to as COA) are allowances based on educational expenses that you incur. This figure is what the Financial Aid Office uses to determine your award eligibility and process your financial aid award package. Withdrawal Notification, Tuition Refunds & Return to Title IV

Students who wish to withdraw from CCMS must notify the Office of the Registrar. Students who “officially withdraw” or leave the CCMS program are tracked by faculty and the Academic Chair and reported to the Registrar with date of last academic activity. The Registrar will immediately notify the Financial Aid Administrator (FAA) of any Official Withdrawals. The date of last academic activity will be used by the FAA to calculate percentage of funds earned in the Return to Title IV (R2T4) process.

Effective July 1, 2011

Federal regulations require that all students who receive federal financial aid make Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (also referred to as SAP throughout this policy) toward achieving a degree. For financial aid purposes, progress is measured by the student’s cumulative grade point average, percentage of credit hours earned in relation to those attempted, and the length of the academic program. The Registrar furnishes this information to the Office of Financial Aid at the end of each semester. In order to assure that students make progress toward earning a degree both in terms of number of hours completed and cumulative GPA, CCMS employs the following financial aid satisfactory progress policy:

PROGRESS STANDARDS: Students must earn a satisfactory grade in at least 67% of the total credit hours attempted.

SEMESTER PROGRESS: Students must, at a minimum, receive a satisfactory grade (*) in the courses they attempt each semester. *For purposes of financial aid, satisfactory grades are A, B, C, D, S, SP or P. Unsatisfactory grades are F, W, U, or I. Audits do not count as attempted hours and are not eligible for financial aid. NOTE: Unsatisfactory grades will not be counted as earned credit hours but will count as attempted credit hours.

Financial Aid Warning: Warning status will be assigned to a student who fails to meet progress standards at the conclusion of a semester. A student assigned a Financial Aid Warning will be notified by email at their CCMS e-mail address. The student may continue to receive financial aid for one subsequent semester under this status; progress standards must be met to continue eligibility and be in good standing.

Financial Aid Probation: A student who was assigned Financial Aid Warning status who does not meet progress standards at the end of the subsequent semester will be placed on Financial Aid Suspension. If the student chooses to appeal the suspension and the appeal is approved, the student is placed on Financial Aid Probation status. A student on Financial Aid Probation may receive financial aid for one subsequent semester. A student on Financial Aid Probation may be placed on an Academic Plan that will require the student to meet certain terms and conditions as determined by the CCMS Financial Aid Appeals Committee. At the conclusion of the SAP Financial Aid Probation semester, the student must meet the progress standards or fulfill the requirements specified in the Academic Plan.

Financial Aid Suspension: A student may be placed on Financial Aid Suspension for one or more of these reasons:

  • A student on Financial Aid Probation fails to meet progress standards and/or who does not fulfill the requirements in his or her academic plan is placed on Financial Aid Suspension.
  • At the end of each semester, if the student does not earn a satisfactory grade in at least 67% of the total credit hours attempted, he or she will be placed on Financial Aid Suspension.
  • A student who does not earn any credit hours in a semester.Any student on Financial Aid Suspension is ineligible for further financial aid and can only receive financial aid again if eligibility is regained by successfully appealing or making up the deficient hours.

EVALUATION PROCESS: Students who do not make SAP are notified by e-mail at their CCMS address of their status (Financial Aid Warning, Financial Aid Probation, or Financial Aid Suspension).

  • Students who receive all I, F, W, or U grades in courses attempted in ANY semester will be placed on Financial Aid Suspension.
  • Repeat courses will be counted in earned credit hours. (Note: ALL courses attempted, except audited courses, count in total credit hours attempted.)
  • Transfer credit hours will be counted in both attempted and earned credit hours.

CUMULATIVE PROGRESS: To be in academic good standing, a student must be making satisfactory progress toward the completion of his/her degree requirements. Satisfactory progress is defined as passing all courses and earning a minimum 2.00 GPA each term at CCMS. Students must, in addition to the above, meet the retention standards of CCMS as outlined in the current CCMS Student Handbook.

MAXIMUM ELIGIBILITY: Maximum eligibility is reviewed each semester. If a student has attempted enough hours to graduate, and has not graduated, a warning email will be sent to the student at their CCMS address, reminding them of maximum eligibility standards. Students who have attempted 150% of the required credit hours for their degree will become ineligible for financial aid.

REPEATED COURSES: Beginning July 1, 2011 students may only receive federal financial aid funding for one repeat of a previously passed course. There is an exception for courses which require repeats (see examples below). Students taking a required repeat of a course should work with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure those credits are counted appropriately for financial aid eligibility. Please note that the student may need to provide documentation from his/her faculty advisor confirming the requirement to repeat.

Examples of repeated coursework that may, or may not, count for financial aid eligibility:

  • Allowable: Repeated coursework may be included if the student received an unsatisfactory or failing grade. There is no limit on the number of allowable repeats if the student does not receive a passing grade, as long as SAP standards are met.
  • Allowable: Repeated coursework may be included if a student needs to meet an academic standard for a particular previously passed course, such as a minimum grade. Example: Student received a D in a course which requires a minimum grade of C for the academic program.
  • Allowable: Student is enrolled in 15 credit hours which include 3 credits repeating a previously passed course. The student’s financial aid eligibility is not impacted by the repeat because the student is enrolled in a minimum of credits which are not repeats.
  • Not Allowable: Student receives a D in a course which does not have a minimum grade requirement for the program and decides to repeat the course to improve his/her GPA. The student may repeat this passed course one time, but if the student wants to repeat it a second time, the second repeat would not count for financial aid eligibility. In this example, the student is enrolled in 12 credits, including the three credit second repeat, so only nine credits will count for financial aid eligibility.

All repeated courses affect financial aid satisfactory academic progress calculations. A repeated course along with the original attempt must be counted as attempted credit hours.

REGAINING FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY

SATISFACTORY PROGRESS APPEAL PROCESS:

Students who lose eligibility for financial aid can appeal that status to the Financial Aid Office. The appeal must be prepared in writing on the Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Form, and must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documents. Reasons that may be acceptable for an appeal are:

  • Serious illness or accident on the part of the student;
  • Death, accident, or serious illness in the immediate family;
  • Class cancelled by CCMS; and
  • Other documented extenuating circumstances

SAP APPEAL LIMITS: The Financial Aid Office may grant or deny any SAP appeal. The maximum number of appeals any student may normally have granted during the total of all their enrollment periods at CCMS is two (2). Under extreme circumstances, a third appeal may be granted, provided that the student has documented proof of the circumstances. In the case of a student who files a third appeal, the reasons for the student’s two previous appeals will be considered when making a decision. The student’s progress within their academic program will be a determining factor on the rare occasion when a third appeal is allowed.

SAP APPEAL REVIEW AND DECISION PROCESS: All appeals must be submitted in writing in paper or electronic form to the CCMS Financial Aid Office. Provide written, detailed information and documentation as requested on the Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Form. SAP Appeals will be reviewed by the CCMS Financial Aid Office.

If an appeal is denied by the CCMS Financial Aid Office and the student wishes to further appeal, the student may appeal that denial to the second level appeal designee. Note: Appeals to the second-level appeal designee that do not contain further explanation and new documentation of the extenuating circumstances will not be approved nor eligible for a second level review and cannot be appealed further.

National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS)

Institutions that enter into an agreement with a potential student, student, or parent of a student regarding a Title IV, HEA loan are required to inform the student or parent that the loan will be submitted to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), and will be accessible by guaranty agencies, lenders, and institutions determined to be authorized users of the data system.

Applicants must be accepted students. This is a paid position in which students assist the Lab Director and Clinical Instructors with the daily operations of the Lab. Lab Assistants are compensated by hourly wages (approximately 20 hours per week) and through a waiver of their clinical lab fee during each semester of employment. Previous experience with embalming is NOT required.

Admission Policy 

Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (CCMS) is committed to providing a non-discriminatory environment to ensure all individuals are treated in a non-discriminatory manner during the application, admission, and enrollment processes for all applicants and students in all terms, conditions, and privileges of the educational program. 

This policy governs admission requirements for the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science to ensure the Office of Admission fulfills its obligation to issue admission decisions that are equally applied to all applicants and that the acceptance of transfer credits complies with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and college policies.

The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (CCMS) operates within the standards and best practices established by the Department of Education (DOE), the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the Council for Higher Education (CHEA), the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE), and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRO) to ensure the academic integrity of transfer credits and applicants.

CCMS offers two fully academic programs, the Bachelor of Mortuary Science and the Associate of Applied Science in Mortuary Science. CCMS is fully accredited and authorized to accept Title IV funds for qualified students.

CCMS accepts and enrolls students on a rolling basis. Enrollment occurs twice annually in the spring (January) and fall (August). Admission decisions are based on the applicant’s academic qualifications as described in this Policy. A waiting list is established to fill seats left open by applicants deferring to another starting semester.  Program acceptance is limited by seating capacity.

Qualified applicants for admission will have met all transfer credit requirements stated in this policy and as seen in the CCMS Transfer Credit Policy (04.01.PUB2) in the Admissions page of the college’s website. Applicants who are enrolled in prerequisite courses at the time of applying may receive provisional acceptance. Accepted and provisionally accepted applicants will be notified of admission decisions via a Letter of Acceptance of Provisional Acceptance from the Office of Admission.

CCMS is not certified to accept international students at this time.

Entrance requirements vary based on program of choice as seen in the Transfer Credit Policy and prerequisites area of the Admissions page at www.ccms.edu. The Office of Admission maintains a published list of transfer programs with which CCMS has established an agreement to receive/send transfer credit

Accepted applicants must submit a nonrefundable confirmation deposit to secure their place in the class as evidence of good faith that they will attend. Enrolled students will receive a credit in the amount of their confirmation deposit applied to their first semester tuition. Deposits are forfeited for those who fail to enroll.

Accepted applicants who have submitted the required confirmation deposit may request a deferred acceptance to a future enrollment term.  All deferral requests should be made in writing as soon as possible after acceptance.  If the deferment is granted, the applicant is assured a place in the desired entering class. If the student fails to enroll, the deposit is forfeited.  Deposits are forfeited for those who have deferred and fail to enroll.

In the case where an accepted applicant requests and is granted a second deferment, an additional confirmation deposit will be required. Upon enrollment, applicant will receive a credit for the total of both deposits applied to their first semester tuition. Both deposits are forfeited for those who have deferred and fail to enroll.

CCMS is committed to protecting the confidentiality of student records in our possession. We retain student records in compliance with both state and federal law, in particular with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Print Admission Policy

CCMS will be distributing $67,340 directly to students, as allocated through the CARES Act’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). The funds will be distributed in the next several weeks, with a goal of having all money distributed by May 12, 2021.

What is the Associate of Individualized Study (AIS) in Pre-Mortuary Science degree?

The TSCC Associate of Individualized Study is a 4 semester (61 credit) online pre mortuary science degree program which fully prepares the “pre-mortuary science student” for matriculation to the CCMS Bachelor of Mortuary Science 4 semester (62 credit) degree program (16 months.)

Forms/Verification

What does it mean to be selected for verification?

Verification is a process to confirm that the information you and your parents provided on your FAFSA is accurate. The Department of Education selects FAFSAs for verification. Others may be selected by schools to clarify information. If selected, a student cannot receive the financial aid that has been awarded until verification is completed. If selected, any award information disclosed to the student about their eligibility is considered tentative until verification is completed.

What do I have to do if I have been selected for verification?

The Financial Aid Office will request certain documentation from you to verify that the information you provided on your FAFSA is correct. A key aspect of completing verification is confirming that the income tax information provided on the FAFSA matches the income tax information on record with the IRS. To do this, a family must either collect and submit an IRS Tax Return Transcript or submit their income tax information on the FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

What is a tax return transcript and how can I get it?

A tax return transcript is a line-by-line accounting of your tax return as it was originally filed with the IRS. Any schedules or additional forms filed will also be in the tax return transcript. This can only be obtained through the IRS and is used as verification that your tax information on your FAFSA matches what is on file with the IRS. Access it online and order the “return” transcript.

What else might be required for verification?

There is verification worksheet that must be completed and signed by the student (and parent if the student is a dependent). If either party received SNAP or TANF benefits during the prior tax year, then documentation of that person’s eligibility must also be included. Other documents may be required depending on the student’s application. The Financial Aid Office will notify the student about what is required to complete their application for verification.

Students who “unofficially withdraw” or leave the CCMS program without official notification are tracked by faculty and the Academic Chair and reported to the Registrar with date of last academic activity.

The Registrar will immediately notify the Financial Aid Administrator of any Unofficial Withdrawals. The date of last academic activity will be used by the FAA to calculate percentage of funds earned in the Return to Title IV (R2T4) process.

Before a school can perform any of the following activities, a school must obtain authorization from a student (or parent borrower):

  • Use FSA funds to pay for allowable charges other than tuition, fees and room and board if the student contracts with the school.
  • Hold an FSA credit balance.
  • Apply FSA funds to prior-year charges other than for tuition, fees, room, and board not to exceed $200.

A school may not require or coerce the student or parent to provide the authorization and must clearly explain to the student or parent how to cancel or modify the authorization. The student or parent may cancel or modify the authorization at any time.

A cancellation or modification is not retroactive—it takes effect on the date that the school receives it from the student or parent. If a student or parent cancels an authorization to use FSA program funds to pay for allowable charges other than tuition, fees and room and board (if the student contracts with the school), or prior-year charges other than for tuition, fees, room, and board, the school may use FSA funds to pay any authorized charges incurred by the student before the notice was received by the school.

If a student or parent cancels an authorization to hold excess funds, the funds must be paid directly to the student or parent as soon as possible, but no later than 14 days after the school receives the notice. Unless otherwise specified, a student or parent may authorize a school to carry out the activities for which authorization is provided for the entire period that the student is enrolled at the school. A student or parent may cancel or modify an authorization at any time. It is understood by the student that the authorization will be in effect unless the student indicates otherwise.

When should you apply?

We recommend that you apply when you are approximately 1/2 done with your prerequisites. But it's never too early to contact our Dean of Enrollment Management and begin the discussion. 

Understand our prerequisites

Know our medical requirements

Students are required to complete a number of inoculations and tests before the first day of class (you may apply prior to beginning inoculations/tests). You will receive more information upon acceptance.

  • Hepatitis B Series inoculation – begin series 6 months prior to program entrance
  • Tuberculosis test- within 6 months prior to program entrance
  • Chest X-Ray – before 1st day of class
  • Tetanus Booster/Inoculation – within 5 years prior to program entrance

International applicants

CCMS is not certified to accept international students at this time. 

English language requirement

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).The testing and results process can take up to three months, therefore those needing to meet this requirement are advised to register and take the test as soon as possible. Registration is completed at TOEFL through Educational Testing Services (ETS). To get a schedule or to register for a test, please visit the TOEFL website. Applicants who have attended a school where the primary language of instruction is English can have this requirement waived.

This policy governs transfer credit requirements for the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science to ensure the Office of Admission fulfills its obligation to issue admission decisions that are equally applied to all applicants and that the acceptance of transfer credits complies with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and college policies.

The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (CCMS) operates within the standards and best practices established by the Department of Education (DOE), the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the Council for Higher Education (CHEA), the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE), and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRO) to ensure the academic integrity of transfer credits and applicants.

CCMS academic programs are fully accredited and authorized to accept Title IV funds for qualified students.

Qualified applicants for admission will have met all admission and transfer credit requirements stated in this policy and as seen in the CCMS Transfer Credit Policy (04.01.DOC1) in the Admissions page of our website. 

Qualified transfer credits will be equivalent to the credits that CCMS issues in its own regionally accredited academic program, meeting the highest educational standards. All earned CCMS credits are transferrable to any other college or university. CCMS credits also meet the highest educational requirements to qualify a candidate for professional licensure in all states.

Transfer credits are considered part of a CCMS student’s permanent academic record. All transferred credits and resident credits earned are reflected on an official CCMS transcript; however only credits earned at CCMS are calculated into a student’s cumulative GPA on official CCMS transcripts.

Qualified Transfer Credits

CCMS accepts transfer of quarter or semester credits when qualified. Qualified credits must:

  1. Be regionally accredited by another college or university, or
  2. Be accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education accredited colleges, or
  3. Be accredited coursework by the American Council on Education (ACE) 
  4. Reflect a grade of “C” or better in all required transfer courses (see “Required Transfer Courses”)
  5. Reflect a cumulative 2.5 GPA for overall transfer courses

Transfer credit must include completion of the below five courses, with a grade of “C” or better in each, to be considered for admission into any CCMS academic program. 

  1. Accounting 
  2. Anatomy & Physiology (lab not required, but recommended)
  3. Chemistry (lab not required, but recommended)
  4. Psychology (Introduction or General)  
  5. Communication Skills (Interpersonal or Basic) 

Note!  Applicants who have previously earned a regionally accredited Associate, Bachelor, Master, or PhD have satisfied credit hour requirements for admission; however official evidence of completion of all above specific course prerequisites must be submitted in compliance with American Board of Funeral Service Education curriculum requirements.

Transfer credit requirements vary based on applicant’s program of choice. The above five courses are mandatory prerequisites for acceptance into either the Bachelor of Mortuary Science or the Associate of Applied Science in Mortuary Science academic program. Entrance requirements by program are as follows:

Bachelor of Mortuary Science Program 

Admission requirements: 

  • Transfer 60 qualified semester credit hours (or 45 quarter credit hours) 
  • Transfer credits must include the five mandatory prerequisite courses

Associate of Applied Science in Mortuary Science Program

Admission requirements: 

  • Transfer 30 qualified semester credit hours (or 90 quarter credit hours) 
  • Transfer credits must include the five mandatory prerequisite courses

EXCEPTIONS OF TRANSFER CREDIT REQUIREMENTS

Certain circumstances warrant consideration for exception under this policy. Exceptions are considered in consultation with the CCMS Academic Chair and College President. No exception to transfer credit or course requirements will be granted without the written approval and signatures of the Academic Chair and College President.

Provisional Acceptance

CCMS strongly encourages completion of all prerequisite coursework prior to enrollment; however exceptions may be granted to accommodate completion of the following three required prerequisite courses concurrently while enrolled in semester 1 at CCMS: Chemistry, Psychology, and Communication Skills.

CCMS requires completion of Accounting and Anatomy & Physiology prerequisites prior to enrollment, as both are foundational to CCMS curriculum delivered during semester I. 

An otherwise qualified applicant who is permitted to complete an allowable prerequisite course(s) while enrolled with CCMS must submit official transcripts to admissions@ccms.edu as evidence of completion prior to being permitted registration in semester II at CCMS. This ensures the necessary educational foundation is in place for a student to be successful as a CCMS student. Completion of all prerequisite and resident credits is a condition of CCMS entrance and graduation requirements. 

CLEP (College-Level Examination Program®)

Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science welcomes students from a wide variety of backgrounds and learning experiences. Many students come to our institution with a firm grounding in a particular discipline. We recognize their prior learning and may accept a full range of College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, which measure mastery of college-level, introductory course content.

Prior Learning

Prior learning credit may be awarded to applicants holding a doctoral-level medical degree prior to CCMS admission. Special consideration for prior learning* of transfer courses, and for attendance in classes, may be given in accordance with demonstrated mastery of the subject matter at the sole discretion of the college and faculty. 

Resident Requirement

CCMS requires a minimum of 30 resident credit hours be completed at CCMS for applicants who have completed an ABFSE accredited mortuary science degree. 

CO-OP Waiver Policy

CCMS may permit waiver of the BMS co-op during semester IV. Transfer credit may be granted ("T") on a case by case basis if the student can present evidence of three (3) years full-time experience as a dual licensed funeral service practitioner (funeral director and embalmer). 

*In accordance with The American Board of Funeral Service Education (Standard 9.2.5.b), no more than 20% of the total number of credits for the program may be awarded through credit for prior learning. All of the curriculum requirements contained in Standard 5 are incorporated in awarding credit for prior learning.

TRANSFER INSTITUTIONS AND ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS

The Office of Admission maintains a published list of all individual programs with which CCMS has established an agreement to receive/send transfer credit that is also accessible on the Admissions page of the college’s website that includes specific course pathways and institution/admission contact information as mandated by the Higher Learning Commission (Policy FDCR.A.10.040). 

The Office of Admission conducts cyclical reviews of agreements to ensure pathway courses align with evolving educational needs of all CCMS programs. 

CCMS is committed to protecting the confidentiality of student records in our possession. We retain student records in compliance with both state and federal law, in particular with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Rachael Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Rachael Anderson joined the #CCMSfamily August 27, 2015 along with her peers in the Fall 2015-2016 CCMS class. She was a bright, beautiful light. She lovingly accepted everyone and was a compassionate caregiver and great advocate and champion for the death care profession. Rachael quickly befriended her peers and successfully saw her dreams come to fruition as she completed her education with CCMS, graduating cum laude. She then set off to central Ohio to pursue an apprenticeship with Shaw-Davis Funeral Home. She was nearing the end of her apprenticeship at the time her life was taken from her. 

To honor Rachael's zest for life and passion for her chosen profession, CCMS established The Rachael Anderson Memorial Scholarship. Her family, along with funeral service professionals, peers, and friends have come together to raise more than $10,000  to date in memory of Rachael to fund the scholarship. 

$2,500 has already been awarded to date in Rachael's honor. The remainder of scholarship funds will be awarded twice per year, to one recipient in each cohort during semester 3, and in consultation with Rachael's family. Awards will be presented to CCMS students who display the same passion for funeral service as Rachael.

Emergency Financial Aid Policy

Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (CCMS) is committed to supporting students' financial needs during time of hardship and global emergency through pursuit of government relief grants where available. The college will pursue and apply for available federal and state funds when qualified and in the best interest of the institution and student body. 

Grant and relief fund allocations under the fiduciary care of the college are distributed in compliance with federal and state requirements, the Department of Education Federal Financial Aid guidelines, and college policy and procedures.

How does the process of matriculation from TSCC to CCMS work?

Students enroll in the TSCC online program (no college credits required to enroll)

  • Successfully complete all program requirements of the 2-year (4 semester) pathway program in the online platform
  • TSCC confers the Associate of Individualized Study degree

Students matriculate into the CCMS BMS on-site program (the AIS meets all transfer credit requirements)

  • Successfully complete all program requirements of the 16-month (4 semester) bachelor program onsite at the Cincinnati College of Mortuary campus located in Finneytown, Ohio.
  • CCMS confers the Bachelor of Mortuary Science degree

After you apply

  • After you’ve submitted your application, our admissions team will review your information and be in touch. 
  • Accepted students will be directed to submit the confirmation deposit, which is credited to the student's semester I tuition.

After Applying

You will receive correspondence by email regarding your application status: Acceptance, Provisional Acceptance, or Ineligibility for Admission to CCMS.

Acceptance to CCMS

Applicants who have completed all entrance requirements are granted acceptance.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to stay in contact with us. Once you have completed all requirements, you will need to submit evidence of this to the Admissions Director.

Ineligibility for Admission to CCMS

Ineligible applicants have not successfully met entrance requirements. You are encouraged to contact the CCMS Admissions Director to determine whether successful completion of entrance requirements could be a possibility in the future. Return to Title IV

In general, Federal regulations assume that you “earn” your Federal financial aid awards directly proportional to the number of days of the term that you attend until you withdraw. If you completely withdraw from school during a term, the school must calculate according to a specific formula the portion of the total scheduled financial assistance you have earned and are therefore entitled to receive up to the time you withdraw. If you or CCMS receives more assistance than you earn, the unearned excess funds must be returned to the Department of Education. On the other hand, if you or CCMS receives less assistance than the amount you have earned, you may be able to receive those additional funds.

The portion of your Federal student aid you are entitled to receive is calculated on a percentage basis by comparing the total number of days in the semester to the number of days you completed before you withdrew. For example, if you complete 30% of the semester, you earn 30% of the assistance you were originally scheduled to receive. This means that 70% of your scheduled awards remain unearned and must be returned to the Department of Education.

Once you have completed more than 60% of the semester, you have earned all (100%) of your assistance. If you withdraw from CCMS before completing 60% of the semester, you may have to repay any unearned financial aid funds that were already disbursed to you. If you received excess funds based on this calculation, CCMS must return a portion of the excess equal to the lesser of:

  • The student’s institutional charges multiplied by the unearned percentage of funds, or
  • The entire amount of the excess funds

If CCMS is not required to return all the excess funds, you must return the remaining amount. The order that CCMS and you must return these funds is as follows:

  • Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan
  • Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan
  • Federal Perkins Loan
  • Federal PLUS Loan
  • Federal Pell Grant
  • Federal SEOG Grant
  • Other Title IV Programs

If you are required to repay loan funds, this is done in accordance with the terms of your loan promissory note. If you must repay any grant funds, the law states that you are not required to repay 50% of the grant assistance that you were calculated to repay. Any grant amount that a student must repay is considered a grant overpayment and therefore must be repaid to CCMS within 45 days.

Arrival and registration

  • Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the program.
  • When you arrive we will sign you in and give you an orientation packet. 
  • We will take a picture of you for your security badge /student ID.

Compensation

Lab Assistants are compensated by hourly wages and through a waiver of their clinical lab fee each semester.

How do I receive the aid?

All eligible students filled out the online form requesting aid. Students received the funds as a paper check.

Students who accept the funds are certifying that they incurred emergency expenses associated with the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.

Why should I enroll in the Associate of Individualized Study (AIS) in Pre-Mortuary Science program?

Convenience and savings!

  • The Associate of Individualized Study (AIS) in Pre-Mortuary Science program is 100% online for your convenience. It is also a less expensive program than other regionally accredited transfer programs. See Terra State’s tuition page for details.

Credit Balance Policy

A Federal Student Aid (FSA) credit balance occurs whenever CCMS applies the student’s FSA awarded funds to the student’s account and the total amount of those FSA funds exceeds the student’s balance due to the College. If this happens, CCMS must pay the credit balance directly to the student or parent as soon as possible but no later than 14 days after:

  • The date the balance occurred on the student’s account, if the balance occurred after the first day of class of a payment period, or
  • The first day of classes of the payment period if the credit balance occurred on or before the first day of class of that payment period.

CCMS may not require you to take any actions to obtain your credit balance. It is the sole responsibility of CCMS to pay, or make available, any FSA credit balance within the 14-day regulatory time frames.

Notwithstanding any authorization obtained by the school, CCMS must provide the student with any remaining FSA credit balance resulting from FSA loan funds by the end of the loan period and any other FSA program credit balances by the end of the last payment period in the award year for which the funds were awarded.

What to expect at Orientation

Student ID
We will take a photo of you for your student ID badge. You will receive your student ID the first week of classes.

Class Registration
The Registrar will enroll you in semester I classes immediately following orientation. If you haven't already submitted your Course Registration Semester I form (included in your Student Enrollment Guide), you may fill one out during orientation. 

Class schedule
You will receive your official class schedule at Orientation. If you are starting in the Spring (January), your classes will be in the afternoon, with one day of morning lab per week. Student Email
Each student is assigned a CCMS email account. You will receive your email login and instructions a few days before the start of semester I. The login will be sent to the personal email address we have on file. Technical questions can be addressed at orientation. Please see the Library Director with any email or technical questions.

Populi Accounts
Each student is assigned a Populi account. Populi is an online system that students use to access course materials, check grades, search the library catalog, complete course evaluations, etc. You will receive your Populi login and instructions a few days before the start of semester I. The login will be sent to your new CCMS email account. Technical questions can be addressed at orientation. Please see the Library Director with any technical questions.

Clinical Lab & Schedule 
The Lab Director will provide information about our Clinical Lab and Lab Orientation, which occurs during week 1. At the end of Orientation, you will receive your Clinical Lab schedule - you will be assigned to Lab one day per week.

Requesting Emergency Financial Assistance - CARES Act 

(Form 03.10.DOC1)

All students enrolled as of March 27, 2020 are eligible to receive the allocated assistance amount of $680 under the CARES Act.

All students are required to complete the online form, whether REQUESTING OR DECLINING assistance. If you did not suffer a negative financial impact during this global pandemic and would like to decline the allocated amount, you will indicate such on the form. Declined relief monies will then be available for another student who suffered substantial financial burden. Questions regarding eligibility and criteria for emergency assistance may be directed to the Vice President / Financial Aid Officer at mivey@ccms.edu.

Are there special admissions requirements for the TSCC AIS Degree in Pre-Mortuary Science program?

Yes, qualified applicants must provide official transcripts of prior learning or submit placement assessment scores indicating preparedness to take college-level English, reading, and math courses. Remediation plans may be developed for incoming students who have not achieved college level math scores.

Can I enter CCMS right out of high school?
Typically no. You’ll have to earn general education credits at a regionally accredited college or university before enrolling in CCMS. Learn more about our prerequisites.

What prerequisites do I need to complete before enrolling at CCMS?
Applicants must earn general education credits at a regionally accredited college or university before enrolling in CCMS. It is to your advantage to take classes in the sciences, as well as social science and business courses. For more information, see prerequisites and our Transfer Credit Worksheet.

How do I find out if my college/university is regionally accredited?
There are a number of ways. 1. You can contact your college; 2. Look up your college in the Department of Education\'s database; 3. Contact our Dean of Enrollment Management who would be happy to assist you. 

Are there any colleges/universities CCMS would recommend for completing prerequisites? 
Although we can’t recommend any particular school, we have developed “college transfer agreements” with many colleges/universities. The advantage of attending one of these schools is that your coursework will be tailored to meet our prerequisites. Learn more about college transfer agreements.

Parking - CCMS has one parking lot, shared by students, employees, and visitors. You may park wherever you like and do not need a tag. Please come to the main entrance and we will buzz you in to the building. 

When does TSCC enroll students into the AIS degree program?

Enrollment occurs twice annually, in the fall and in the spring. A maximum of 25 students are accepted each semester's cohort. Be sure to apply and register early due to space being limited.

What will my class schedule be like?
You will receive your official schedule at orientation. If you enroll in the Spring, you will have afternoon classes M-F as well as one day of morning lab per week. If you enroll in Fall, you will have morning classes M-F as well as one day of afternoon lab per week. See sample schedules.

30-Day Fund Report: CARES HEERF Distribution

As of July 7, 2020 the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science has distributed $59,840 to 88 students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

As of March 14, 2020 the college had 99 on-campus students who were determined to be eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. 

The college opted to give all eligible students an equal share of the funds, meaning each student received $680.

Students were instructed to complete an online form either accepting or declining the funds. Students were issued paper checks and either picked them up at the College or received them by mail. 

Is this pathway just for Ohio residents?

No, this program is for anyone interested in mortuary science. In fact, out-of-state tuition is very competitive. Click here for more information about tuition and fees.

Format

Please plan to arrive roughly 15 minutes before the start time to register. The program begins with presentations from our faculty and staff and ends with a student panel. Enjoy a tour and refreshments before or after the program. The whole event lasts approximately two hours. Format and topics are subject to change at CCMS' discretion.

Since this AIS is an online program, will I ever need to come to the Terra State campus?

No. This is a 100% online program, from the voucher option to take the placement assessment at an approved off-site testing location, to the option of corresponding with your academic and career advisor over the phone or online. However, you are welcome to visit campus at any time.

Is there a positive job outlook for funeral services professionals?

Absolutely. As the baby boomer generation enters into retirement, the need for qualified funeral service professionals continually increases. According to the Occupation Outlook Handbook, overall employment projections will increase over the next decade.  The median wage for funeral service professionals fluctuates based on geographic location and other factors, which you may find by visiting the Bureau of Labor Statistics website at www.bls.gov

Loans

What are loans?

If you apply for financial aid, you may be offered loans as part of your school’s financial aid offer. A loan is money you borrow and must pay back with interest.

If you decide to take out a loan, make sure you understand who is making the loan and the terms and conditions of the loan. Student loans can come from the federal government or from private sources such as a bank or financial institution. Loans made by the federal government, called federal student loans, usually offer borrowers lower interest rates and have more flexible repayment options than private loans.

Federal Direct Loans

Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loans are for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education. Federal student loans are funded by the federal government.

How do I apply for a Federal Direct Loan?

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Complete Entrance Loan Counseling. This is required per federal regulations.
  • ALL first-time Federal Direct Stafford Loan borrowers must complete Stafford Entrance Loan Counseling before being awarded a Federal Direct Stafford Loan. An electronic confirmation will be transmitted to the Financial Aid Office within 24 hours.
  • Complete your Master Promissory Note. This will only need to be completed once while you attend CCMS.

What Is the Difference Between Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans?

After you apply for aid, you may be offered either a subsidized or unsubsidized loan, or a combination of both. The primary difference between the two is the interest rate and when the interest begins to accrue.

  • Subsidized Loans are awarded on the basis of financial need. You will not be charged any interest while the loan is in deferment status, such as while you are enrolled, as the federal government subsidizes or pays the interest.
  • Unsubsidized Loans charge interest from the time the money is first disbursed until it is paid in full. The interest is capitalized, meaning that you pay interest on any interest that has already accrued. One way to minimize how much interest accrues is to pay the interest as it accumulates.

Only undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need are eligible for Subsidized Loans. Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students. Federal regulations are used to determine the amounts each student may borrow by considering the cost of attendance and other financial aid.

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans

CCMS participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loan). The Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) is a loan that parents can obtain to help pay the cost of education for their dependent undergraduate children. Eligible parents borrow directly from the U. S. Department of Education and can borrow up to their child’s cost of attendance minus other financial aid received.

  • Under “What You Need” – click on “Parent PLUS.”
    • Complete “Student/Parent Personal Information” -> continue

Will the CCMS Bachelor of Mortuary Science qualify me to become licensed in my state?

Yes. Although licensing requirements are governed by each state individually, the regionally and professionally accredited CCMS academic programs meet or exceed each state licensing board’s educational standards and requirements.

Clinical Lab (Embalming Lab)

I don\'t have any experience with embalming. Will I be at a disadvantage?
No! CCMS students start their education at all different levels of experience. You are at CCMS to learn, so prior experience is not necessary.

What will my lab schedule be like?
You will be scheduled for lab (Clinical Mortuary Practice) one day per week, either in the morning or the afternoon. You will receive your schedule at orientation.

Is there a lab orientation?
Yes, there is a lab orientation during the first week of classes. This is in addition to general orientation on the first day of school.

Do you employ students in the clinical lab?

Full-time Enrollment Defined & Financial Aid

Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science academic programs are structured for full-time attendance. The College and the Department of Education defines full-time enrollment as 12 or more credit hours taken in any one term. Students enrolled full-time are eligible for financial aid assistance (FAFSA).

Part-time enrollment is defined as less than 12 credit hours per term. Part-time enrollment affects financial aid eligibility.

Does CCMS offer childcare services?
No, we do not have child care facilities, nor are we affiliated with a child care facility.

Are guests allowed on campus?
In order to be courteous to other students and to maintain the maximum level of security and confidentiality, students must keep personal visitors to a minimum.

Tuition Payment & Refund Policy

Tuition Payment

Tuition and fees are invoiced each term through the student’s account and are payable by the third week of each semester. Students receiving financial aid should work directly with the college Bursar. As awards are granted and applied, an updated account statement will be provided to the student electronically. Updated account statements will reflect applied credits and account balances. The CCMS Bursar is available to consult with you in person, by email, or by phone at (513) 618-1925. Students will also work directly with a FAFSA Advisor who specializes in student aid. CCMS reserves the right to charge 1.5% per month interest on all unpaid balances once a student is officially withdrawn from the College.
